Cloud computing is a general
term for a class of activities that enables
users to employ computational resources of
multiple, geographically dispersed computer
systems networked via high-speed Internet
connections. Cloud computing is a dynamic and
expanding class of business services with
important regulatory implications. While some
dimensions of these new business activities
fall within established export control
experience, many are unique and pose difficult
questions for regulatory officials and for
company export managers.
Cloud computing
can include a variety of common applications of
low strategic concern, but technological
evolution is making possible cloud computing
services that could become an important focus
of export enforcement activity. As a result,
export managers must be aware of developments
in cloud offerings, how U.S. export control
agencies have interpreted controls as they
apply to this evolving class of service, and
how to manage export compliance
risk.
This dial-in seminar will provide
an overview of cloud computing, its unique
aspects in terms of U.S. export controls,
prevailing regulatory interpretations, and
approaches to risk management for compliance
managers advising businesses that offer cloud
services.
At Sun Microsystems Bob served
as internal advisor on export control matters,
provided regulatory interpretation and risk
analysis, designed compliance programs, and
developed and delivered compliance training
around the world. He conducted due-diligence
reviews for Sun acquisitions, negotiated with
U.S. regulatory agencies on Sun's business
initiatives, and delivered precedent-setting
export authorizations. For Bob's complete bio,
